Congratulations to current MAS MBC student Emi Koch, whose nonprofit Beyond The Surface International recently won a grant from Students Rebuild, a program of the Bezos Family Foundation!
Beyond The Surface and the eight other local conservation groups that were awarded grants were featured in Scientific American for their work “addressing [ocean] challenges and fostering new leadership for conservation”. Beyond the Surface International’s mission is to “build social-ecological resilience through surfing, storytelling, and mindfulness workshops.” They work in several locations around the world, but in Peru their aim is to support marginalized artisanal fishing communities, starting with local young people. Next, they will host workshops and an arts festival in schools and fishing villages along Peru’s coast to promote ocean literacy and policy engagement, and share scientific information.
